Garage Shelf

Garage Shelves and More

What you need to know:

While most people keep their cars in their garages, they also tend to stick in a whole lot of other stuff as well. Most people wouldn’t care if they’ve got the right kind of storage for their garage up until the point when the tower of junk is threatening to cover the car and burst out through the garage door. That’s when most people will say its time to get a garage shelf or two.

Like any other shelf you stick inside your home, choosing the right kind of shelf depends a lot on what you’re going to put on it. If you’re keeping all the old junk then you’re going to need some heavy duty shelving, most of which you can find at the hardware store or hypermart. You may need to do some drilling but installing a long thick plank shelf like that is relatively easy compared to most other DIY projects. While you’ve probably already heard this and thought about it, be sure to bring along your trusty leveler. You don’t want to end up with a slanted garage shelf, especially when you’re stacking extra cans of paint on it. If you do go for an enclosed garage shelf, installing such a unit is relatively easy in the long run.

If you like the covered kind of garage shelf you can always get some cabinet style shelving for your garage. Buying and installing such things are just a bit harder than the aforementioned simple plank of hardwood. They also offer a bit more protection for stuff like cleaners, detergents and other dangerous chemicals like bleach. However, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.

You can always go for the same old hardwood heavy duty wooden plank it’s just that for those dangerous stuff you’d like to keep under wraps you can always do the obvious and keep them in a clear plastic container which you can then place on the shelf.

Finding tough clear plastic containers is relatively easy as you’ll probably find them in the same hypermart or hardware store you went to get the garage shelf itself. While this approach lets you store practically anything on the shelf it is also a lot more affordable compared to getting a cabinet-type shelf which can be nearly double the price of your standard heavy-duty plank shelving. If you’re not particularly handy with the drill, you can always get the local handyman to install it for you as well.
